Uber has introduced a significant security upgrade in 12 cities, including Philadelphia. Riders will now undergo a verification process to ensure their identity matches their account information. This initiative aims to address safety concerns raised by drivers.
Upon verification, users will receive a blue checkmark on their Uber account. Heather Childs, Uber’s Chief Trust and Security Officer, explained that the verification process involves cross-checking user information with a trusted third-party database.
While most users will be automatically verified based on existing account details, those who are not verified may need to upload a government ID. However, not having a verified status does not prohibit users from using Uber services.
The rider verification program is seen as a step towards promoting safety for both drivers and riders. The pilot program is currently active in 12 cities and is not intended to conduct criminal background checks on riders.
Uber emphasizes the importance of verifying the driver’s identity before entering the vehicle for safety reasons. The company plans to expand the rider verification program to more cities in the future.
