Parents, another reason to pay attention to your kids’ social media accounts: X/Twitter now allows adult content.

X/Twitter has changed its rules to allow porn and other adult content to be shared on the platform. Users can post consensual adult nudity or sexual behavior, but not in obvious places like profile pictures. X/Twitter recommends users who post adult content regularly to use content warnings on images and videos.

The platform believes adults should be able to create and consume sexual content as a form of artistic expression. X/Twitter’s new guidelines state that sexual expression can reflect personal beliefs and experiences.

This move towards NSFW content on X/Twitter has been in the works for a while. The platform is also considering allowing NSFW communities to apply for an “Adult Content” label to avoid overcrowding. This change is similar to Tumblr’s shift in guidelines to allow nudity but not sexually explicit imagery.

With X/Twitter owner Elon Musk looking to increase profits, allowing NSFW content is seen as a way to attract more users. The platform has been losing advertisers, with reports suggesting a potential loss of $75 million in revenue in 2023.
