Thailand’s Senate has approved a marriage equality bill, making it the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. Supporters of the bill have hailed this decision as a significant advancement for LGBTQ+ rights.

The Senate overwhelmingly voted in favor of the bill, with 130 senators supporting it and only four members opposing it. The next step is for the bill to be endorsed by the king before it officially becomes law in Thailand. This final approval process is typically seen as a formality. The law is expected to take effect 120 days after it is published in the royal gazette.
