The Social Security Fairness Act will provide significant benefit increases for many Americans. Over 2.1 million retirees on Social Security will receive an average boost of $360 per month. Additionally, more than 700,000 surviving spouses will see their monthly benefits increase by an average of between $700 and $1,190.

Representative Underwood has supported this legislation since she joined Congress in 2019 and worked hard to get it passed.

The new law removes two unfair provisions called the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These provisions, added in 1983, reduced the Social Security benefits of many retired public workers and their spouses who had jobs in both covered and non-covered areas. Now, nearly three million Americans will receive the full benefits they deserve without unfair reductions.
