A 32-year-old woman from Maryland, Talecka Brown, is in custody after being accused of shooting her 13-year-old daughter and allegedly instructing her to lie about what happened.
On Tuesday, the Seat Pleasant Police Department announced that Brown has been charged with first-degree attempted murder related to the shooting, which occurred the previous day. Police arrived at her home around 4:50 p.m. and found her daughter suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. The girl is currently in critical but stable condition at a local hospital.
Court records from Prince George’s County District Court reveal that Brown faces several charges, including first-degree assault, second-degree assault, first-degree murder, and using a firearm in a felony. She is being held without bond, with a preliminary hearing set for October 25.
Cedric Heyward, Acting Chief of the Seat Pleasant Police Department, expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating, “It is always tragic when we have acts of violence within our community, but it is heart-wrenching when the perpetrator is supposed to be your protector. I’m glad to hear that the victim is recovering at a local hospital, but the emotional trauma will remain for some time.”
According to a report from NBC, the alleged victim said that a fight broke out when she returned home from school. She claims that the argument escalated into a physical confrontation, and she heard gunfire while walking down the stairs, causing her to fall. After the shooting, it is alleged that Brown told her daughter to lie and say that an intruder was responsible for the shooting. Later, Brown reportedly suggested that an unidentified homeless person was to blame.
Since Brown’s arrest, prosecutors have highlighted a phone call she made from jail, raising concerns that she might influence her daughter as the case proceeds.
