Louisiana to soon implement no-permit concealed carry law

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has signed Senate Bill 1, allowing law-abiding citizens aged 18 and older to carry a concealed weapon without a permit. State Representative Danny McCormick stated that this law is for law-abiding citizens only, not criminals. While Louisiana has always allowed open carry, the new law has caused some concern due to the age requirement.

State Representative Tammy Phelps expressed reservations about 18-year-olds carrying concealed weapons, emphasizing the need for training to handle such situations. Despite an increase in gun violence, McCormick believes that 18-year-olds should have the right to defend themselves from potential threats.

Phelps cautioned young people about responsible gun use, reminding them that just because they can carry a weapon doesn’t mean they should. The Shreveport Police Department stated that this law won’t change their policing approach, as officers are aware that citizens may be armed lawfully or unlawfully.

The new law is set to take effect on July 4.
