Instagram announced the launch of “Teen Accounts” for users under 18, with automatic privacy protections. Users under 16 need parent permission to change account settings. The changes aim to address parents’ top concerns about teen online safety, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri.

Teen Accounts will be rolled out starting with new users, existing teen users will switch within 60 days. Teens will have private accounts by default and need parent permission to switch to public. They can control who sees their content and messages. Parents can monitor their teen’s account and set restrictions.

To limit screen time, Teen Accounts will be in “sleep mode” from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Content settings will restrict what teens see in search functions. Instagram has measures to prevent lying about age and will ask users to verify their age.

The changes were driven by concerns over social media’s impact on teen mental health. Research shows links between social media use and depression, anxiety, body image issues, and lower life satisfaction. The Surgeon General and American Psychological Association have raised concerns.

Instagram consulted parents and teens globally in making these changes. The focus is on creating a safe platform for teens to explore and connect. Parents are seen as key in shaping their teen’s experience on Instagram. Robust tools are available for parents to customize their teen’s account settings.
