A campaign called “Operation Southern Slow Down” is urging drivers in Georgia and other southern states to drive slower. This campaign, now in its eighth year, aims to raise awareness about speeding and enforce speed limits on interstates and major highways.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding-related crashes resulted in the deaths of 12,151 people in the United States in 2022, marking a 28% increase from 2019. In Georgia, the number of fatalities in speeding-related crashes rose by 56% between 2018 and 2022.

Director Allen Poole of the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety emphasized the importance of slowing down to prevent accidents and save lives. The NHTSA provided safety tips such as allowing more stopping distance at higher speeds and setting a good example for children by driving within speed limits.

Remember to drive safely, wear your seat belt, and give speeding drivers plenty of space on the road. Let’s work together to make our highways safer for everyone.
