A wealthy couple from West Virginia, Donald Ray Lantz, 63, and Jeanne Kay Whitefeather, 62, are facing serious charges for allegedly keeping their adopted Black children locked in a barn and forcing them to work as slaves. They pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including human trafficking, forced labor, and child neglect.
The couple’s bond was increased to $500,000 each due to the severity of the charges. The children were found in deplorable conditions in the backyard shed of their home in Sissonville. The indictment alleges human rights violations based on the children’s race.
Neighbors reported that the children were forced to work on the farm and not allowed inside the house. When the police found them, the teens were in poor condition, sleeping on the floor without proper bedding. The couple claimed the children liked staying in the shed, but the children revealed enduring abuse at both their West Virginia and Washington state homes.
The couple fled to Washington state upon learning of the investigation. The money used for their bail was allegedly earned from trafficking activities. The bond funds are being held by the court, with prosecutors suggesting it should be used for the children’s benefit.
The trial for the couple is scheduled for September 9. The fate of the children in light of these events remains uncertain.
