Parents are often relieved when the back-to-school season arrives after a summer filled with sibling arguments and kids repeatedly asking, “What can I do?” However, one aspect of this time that doesn’t bring as much joy is back-to-school shopping.

The long lists of items needed, such as backpacks, lunch boxes, shoes, and clothes, can add up quickly in cost, causing stress for many parents. Recent surveys suggest that back-to-school shopping will be more expensive this year, with parents expected to spend around $475 per child, a 22% increase from the previous year.

Despite the rising costs, some parents are finding ways to manage their budgets. A study by NerdWallet shows that some parents are adopting a “buy now, pay later” approach, while others are discussing budgeting with their kids. Additionally, many shoppers are looking for deals early, with 18% already searching for discounts in June.

To alleviate the financial pressure of back-to-school shopping, experts recommend planning ahead, making detailed shopping lists, checking for online discounts, setting budgets, and taking advantage of sales and coupons. Reusing items from previous years and using cash-back cards for purchases can also help save money.

When shopping for children of different ages, consider taking younger kids to discount stores where labels may not matter as much. For older kids with specific preferences, it’s important to set expectations and involve them in budgeting decisions. Encouraging kids to prioritize essential items and reminding them that they don’t need everything at once can also help manage costs.
