According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta’s metro area has been identified as having the third highest rate of new HIV cases in the country. In 2021 alone, over 1,500 new cases were reported in the city. Jeff Cheek, the director of Fulton County’s Department of HIV Elimination, attributed the increasing numbers to a lack of fear among young individuals regarding HIV.
Cheek, who has been involved in HIV prevention for many years, highlighted the importance of early testing and seeking care. He emphasized the role of free testing services provided by entities like the health department in addressing the issue.
