A Florida police officer’s alarming response to what he believed was a gunshot was caught on body-camera footage. Officer Jesse Hernandez mistook the sound of an acorn falling on his patrol car for a gunshot and dropped to the ground, rolled, and fired his pistol at a restrained suspect.

The incident, which occurred in November, only came to light recently. Hernandez fired approximately 18 shots, claiming he had been shot, but it was later determined that he was never under fire. The detained suspect, Marquis Jackson, was unarmed and endured the barrage of shots while sitting in the back of the patrol car.

Jackson expressed the lasting emotional impact of the incident, stating that he is “damaged for life.” The department conducted an investigation, and while Hernandez denied the findings, Sergeant Beth Roberts, Hernandez’s partner, will not face disciplinary action for her involvement in the shooting.

Hernandez served as a deputy in the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and had completed two tours in Afghanistan. Jackson was eventually released without any charges filed against him.
