The impact of long, hot showers on male fertility

Taking a steaming hot water bath after a long and tiring day is a comforting experience, especially during the winter season. It helps wash away stress and brings a sense of calm. However, have you ever wondered if hot showers have any impact on male fertility?

The testicles play a crucial role in sperm production and the production of testosterone, the male hormone responsible for various changes in the body. The testicles are located outside the body cavity and are meant to be around four degrees cooler than the rest of the body. This lower temperature is important for the effective functioning of the organs and the production of sperm.

According to Harvard Health Publishing, there are germ cells in the testicles that work best in temperatures slightly lower than the normal body temperature. When the temperature in the area is increased by two to four degrees, which can happen due to hot showers or other reasons, it can impact both sperm production and testosterone levels.

When you expose yourself to hot water during a shower or spend time in hot tubs or jacuzzis, your body temperature is likely to rise. This increase in temperature can also overheat the sperm cells, affecting their function and fertility.

Therefore, it is advised, especially for males, to avoid taking long hot showers and spending time in hot tubs to prevent a reduction in fertility. However, avoiding hot showers is not the only lifestyle change that can help. Wearing tight undergarments, leather pants, or bicycle shorts can also affect male fertility by bringing the testicles closer to the body and increasing their temperature. It is better to wear garments made of breathable fabric like cotton to keep the genitals cool and reduce the risk of infections.
