A Phoenix mother, Wanda Johnson, is accused of murder and child abuse in the death of her newborn daughter.
On March 11, 2024, Johnson, 26, said she woke up to her 3-month-old daughter having a seizure. She claimed the seizure stopped and went back to sleep. When the seizure occurred again, she took the infant to a hospital. The child was airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital in critical condition and passed away two days later.
Medical staff at Phoenix Children’s Hospital reported that the infant had suffered severe injuries, including a brain bleed, swelling of the brain, fractured ribs, liver laceration, and other internal injuries. An autopsy revealed blunt force injuries to the infant’s head and chest.
Initially, Johnson denied causing the injuries, but during a follow-up interview on Aug. 26, she admitted to squeezing her daughter and cracking her back. Johnson demonstrated this action using an infant baby doll. She was then arrested, booked into jail, and is being held on a $1 million cash bond.
