A mother in metro Atlanta has been sentenced for the tragic death of her child after pleading guilty. A’zaria Burton, 23, will spend the rest of her life in prison, with an additional five years. Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson described the incident as a “senseless murder” that took the life of her 5-year-old son, Jayveon Pruitt. Burton stabbed Jayveon 22 times and attempted to cover up his death by setting fire to their apartment in October 2023. She pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including murder, assault, arson, and tampering with evidence.
Jayveon’s father, Daquarius Pruitt, shared heartbreaking memories of his last conversation with his son before the tragic event. The following day, a fire broke out at their apartment complex, leading to the discovery of Jayveon’s body with stab wounds. Burton was arrested shortly after, revealing her distressing motives and actions to the police.
Despite the opportunity to speak during the plea hearing, Burton remained silent and showed no remorse. District Attorney Austin-Gatson expressed condolences to those affected by the crime. Pruitt, devastated by his son’s death, hopes people remember Jayveon for his joyful and playful nature, rather than the tragic circumstances surrounding his passing.
